In October 2000, AMVESCAP, the US financial services group and owners of INVESCO UK acquired the Henley based UK fund managers Perpetual for £1.2 billion. To help ensure the successful integration of Perpetual's 700 Henley based employees, the combined management team invited People in Business to provide feedback on the effectiveness of communication efforts and overall perceptions of the integration.
We consulted 77 individuals chosen at random from each function and level in London and Henley. While everybody understood the rationale for putting the business together and that the mechanics of the integration had been efficiently managed, there was unresolved “bereavement” at Henley where a strong legacy culture had yet to be replaced. Furthermore management responsibilities lacked clarity (often the case in the early months following a merger).
Our report made detailed recommendations for action to improve communications in particular aiming to correct both sites' perceptions of each other, the development of a common culture and management style and the building of shared values and understanding.
The combined company has achieved significant changes which reflect the needs highlighted in the report. These include a comprehensive brand review which resulted in a decision to retain both INVESCO and Perpetual brands.
INVESCO UK, is now in a strong position to benefit from the successful integration of its latest acquisition. |
