People in Business was approached by BALPA, the British Airline Pilots Association, following a BA Flight Crew near strike which cost £15m in lost sales. BALPA's aim was to establish a new relationship with the Company without which the many planned improvements across the airline would not have been possible.

People in Business worked with BALPA, Flight Operations and flight crew who quickly saw the potential benefit and offered every assistance. Our intervention broke the impasse.

Following extensive research and several senior management workshops a set of guiding principles covering the future of the relationship were agreed and sent with a joint letter from BA Director of Flight Crew Capt. Mike Jeffery and BALPA General Secretary Christopher Darke. This was a ‘first' in the employer / union history.

Over the following years, PiB have been engaged in a variety of follow up activities to establish and maintain the behaviours required to ensure that the guiding principles remain truly in place. This has involved reviewing the roles and responsibilities agreed for both sides, follow up research on the attitudes within the company and the union and the facilitation of management workshops.

"It seemed hard work at the time, but if you don't start a journey, you don't change things. Your organisation {PiB} were a fundamental part of creating a changed environment"

Captain Mike Jeffery, Director of Flight Crew
